FETHIYE
Fethiye is the largest town in the area and has a lively port and market. Fethiye provides another change of pace to both Ovacik/Hisaronu and Oludeniz. It is a working Turkish town but has many attractions on offer for visitors.
It has a picturesque harbour and marina, ancient ruins including rock tombs, amphitheatre, fortress and the Paspatur or ‘old city’ with its winding streets. The Paspatur is particularly popular with visitors as it has a bazaar and is home to a myriad of shops, bars and great restaurants.
Turkey is famed for its quality gold and silver which can be bought from a number of established, good quality jewellers in and around Paspatur. Turkish carpets and kilims also provide an excellent purchase and can be bought in Hisaronu, but as a larger town Fethiye will provide you with a wider choice. Locum Turkish delight producers offer you the opportunity to watch this sweet being made and try before you buy.
Fethiye harbour provides numerous sailing, fishing, sub-aqua and boat trips to explore the twelve islands in Fethiye bay. From as little as £10, you can spend a full day at sea discovering this beautiful coastline. These trips usually include a freshly cooked lunch served on board the boat.
If you have a taste for seafood, the Fethiye fish market is open every day. The market is completely surrounded by restaurants, all ready to cook and serve up your meal, immediately after you purchase.
There is a large goods and clothing market on Tuesdays in Fethiye and another in Hisaronu on Mondays, offering the opportunity to purchase bargains and test your haggling skills! Leather goods, 'designer' clothing, fresh produce, herbs & spices and of course Turkish delight are all particularly good buys.
